Mary Allen

Kernersville-Mary Elizabeth Swink Allen, 85, of Kernersville, went with a special angel to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 12, 2018. She was a long-time cancer survivor, but when it came back late last year, she accepted it with the grace she had always shown and decided not to fight it. Being a true Southern Lady, she never once complained during her illness and she passed away peacefully with family by her side. Mrs. Allen, formerly of Castleford Drive in Colfax, was born in Forsyth County on April 19, 1933 to the late Gertie Viola Wilson and the late Crayton Scott Swink. She was wed to the late James Henry Allen on September 1, 1951 and gave birth to her cherished daughter, Nancy, her only child, three years later. She retired from Lorillard Tobacco Company in 1990, after 33 years of service. She was a devoted member of Smith Grove Baptist Church in Colfax. Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Roger Crayton Swink; and a sister, Ruby Viola Ledford. She was a proud, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law and sister. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Kelley and husband Richard Kelley; granddaughter Mary Wallace and husband Kevin; grandson Paul Kelley, Jr. and wife Megan; great-grandsons Mitchell Atkins and Hunter Atkins; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 15 at 11:00 AM at Smith Grove Baptist Church with Dr. Charles "Chuck" Peters officiating. After the memorial service, she will be laid to rest in Smith Grove Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00PM on Thursday evening, June 14, 2018 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Kernersville. Because of their unselfish, untiring service, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Community Hospice of Statesville, 1308 Davie Drive, Statesville, NC 28677.
