Our mother, Mary Ann Mowry Snyder, was born in Pittsburgh, PA on June 27, 1936, to Frank and Eda Augenstein Mowry. After many years of decline, she took her last breath on June 10, 2025. The instant her beating heart stopped, she was immediately in the presence of her Lord Jesus Christ. She was 17 days shy of her 89th birthday.
Mom graduated from Clairton High School in 1954. At the age of 16, she won an essay contest with American Field Service and was selected to participate in a summer exchange student program in Munich, Germany. She remained friends with the daughter of the host family until Hannelore’s death several years ago. Mom went on to graduate from Presbyterian School of Nursing. While in nursing school, a handsome soldier in uniform visited her church. He was a southern boy by the name of Cletus Snyder. He waited for her to finish school. Three days after graduation, they married and began life in Winston Salem. Mom started working as an RN in the OB unit of North Carolina Baptist Hospital in 1957. Retiring after 43 years of service at The Baptist, she occasionally worked for Drs. Mark Meier and Stephen Hux at what is now known as Arcadia Family Practice.
Mom was the heart of our family. She was a tremendous cook and seamstress. She had many hobbies over the years, including flower arranging, cake decorating, candy making, photography, quilting, upholstery, and most recently, making greeting cards. Adventuresome at heart, she would ride any roller coaster. She went white water rafting and tried sky diving at the age of 50. She loved to travel. She and Dad visited all 50 states as well as over 30 countries. These trips were all neatly and systematically documented in numerous photo albums. Being from a blue-collar city, she grew up an avid sports fan.
Mom and Dad were founding members of Grace Baptist Church in Germanton, NC and attended there until their passing. Her faith in God was foremost in her life and her devotion included playing the piano at church, teaching Sunday school, and enriching her children with Bible stories, prayer, and the Christian character she exemplified. A skilled and supremely welcoming hostess, she and Dad hosted literally scores of visiting preachers, missionaries, and their families at their dinner table and as overnight guests.
Our dad preceded Mom in death after 66 years of marriage as well as her parents, all her siblings, and her in-laws and their spouses. She was the last living member of her generation in our family.
Surviving family includes daughter, Beth (Marty); sons, Dan (Rhonda) and David (fiancée Hailin); grandchildren, Austin (Hannah), Nathan (Ellie), Samantha (Kevin), Becka (Blaine), Jessica (Daniel), Noah, Sierra (Cade), Adam and Gabriel ; and eight living great-grandchildren, Vance, Lennon, Adalyn, Anna Beth, Waylon, Campbell, Beckham and Tenille and two more on the way.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 13, 2025, at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel, 6685 Shallowford Rd., Lewisville, NC 27023, with Pastor Andy Proctor officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2:00 PM at the funeral home prior to the service. A private burial for the immediate family will take place following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Trellis Supportive Care of Winston-Salem, https://www.trellissupport.org/donate or Samaritan’s Purse, www.samaritanspurse.org/our-ministry/donate-online/
