Mrs. Mary Louise McGee Badgett, 98, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Louise was known as MaMa Lou to all who knew or met her. She was a dedicated wife for over 70 years, a loving mother, and adoring grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt. MaMa Lou was born in Wallburg to Clemons Lafayette McGee and Ruth Etta Henderson McGee. After graduating from high school, she worked and played basketball for Chatham Mills. She married Hadley Badgett and worked for the Winston-Salem Recreation Department, teaching square dancing. MaMa Lou was an amazing golfer, basketball player, gardener and extraordinary cook, known for her strawberry shortcake. She enjoyed most in life being a homemaker and spending time with family. MaMa Lou was dearly loved and will be profoundly missed. Family, friends and all who met MaMa Lou appreciated her open mind, compassion, sense of humor, and inner strength, demonstrated by her words, “We can handle this,” words that will remain with her family forever.
In addition to her parents, Louise was preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years, James Hadley Badgett; two daughters: Ann Israel and Becky Meshaw; three sisters: Margaret Neal, Evelyn Stanley and Katherine Flowe; and three brothers: Henry McGee, C.L. McGee and Charles McGee. Surviving are three grandchildren: Kim Peatross, Karen Paris and Allen Marion (Mike); four great-grandchildren: Henley Peatross, Jack Peatross, Hudson Mankin and Madelyn Mankin; and one brother, John McGee (Betty). A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
