Mary Ellen Hill Davis of Lewisville passed on September 27 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, surrounded by the love and caring of family and friends. Mary was born in Gold Hill, NC, and grew up in Greensboro, NC. Mary was musical from the start, performing by age five with her parents, sister and brother. She was constantly singing solos, leading groups, playing piano and mandolin and even performing on the radio. Mary continued her love of music with a BA degree in Sacred Music from Bob Jones University and a teaching certificate through UNC Greensboro. She then headed the choral department of Druid Hills High School. Over the next sixty years, Mary gave the gift of music wherever she went. She conducted choirs, joined chorals, played hymns, gave performances, inspired young musicians, prodded old musicians, and brought the beauty of music to all. She was the Director of Music in many churches, started the Surry Community College music department, led church conference choirs, ardently supported the National Federation of Music Clubs through local participation, President of the State Federation, and roles in the National Federation, and enthusiastically participated in the Charlotte Oratorio Singers, the Winston-Salem Symphony Choral, and the Centenary Chancel Choir for nineteen years. But her private music students perhaps gave her the most joy. She taught piano, voice, and organ to well over 350 music students throughout her career. We thank Mary for making the world a brighter place with the beauty of her life and her music. Mary is survived by her husband, Don Davis, and by their twin sons, Charles and Nolan. Charles and his wife Danielle have four sons, Brandon, Cameron, Jase, and Kai. Nolan and his wife Vanessa have two sons, Ridge and Max. Mary is also survived by her sister Nettie and brother William. A graveside service will be held at New Home United Methodist Church Cemetery in East Bend, NC on Monday, September 29 at 2:00 PM. All friends and family are invited.
