Mary Elizabeth Stewart Shough

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Stewart Shough, 84, was born at New Hanover Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, NC to the late Horace Stewart, Jr. and Mary Williams Carr Stewart. She grew up in Goldsboro, NC, graduating from Goldsboro High School. She attended East Carolina College receiving a BS degree in Elementary Education. She taught first grade for a few years, before becoming a homemaker.

With a beautiful soprano voice, she enjoyed singing in the chorus in her high school, college, and choir at church. She was a member of Sherwood Forest (formerly Burkhead) United Methodist Church.

Surviving is her husband of 64 years, Aaron Shough; son, Steven (Debbie) Shough; daughter, Mary Katherine (Jim) Branson; sister, Margaret Stewart Montana; brother-in-law, Stuart (June) Shough; five grandchildren, Michael, Molly, Joshua, Edith, and Derrick; three great grandchildren, Stewart, Isbella, and Isla; and many special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends at 12:00pm, one hour prior to the 1:00pm celebration of life service on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at Sherwood Forest United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sherwood Forest United Methodist Church, 5250 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106, Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
