Mary Jane Austin

Mary Jane Austin was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She left this world to be with her Lord on August 21, 2023 at age 82.

She was one of nine siblings born to Walter “Pete” Haney and Bertha Jane Haney on April 20, 1941. Raised after her mother’s passing by her loving stepmother Emily Blackman Haney. After graduating from high school, Mary Jane worked at Dolly Madison Bakery where she met her soulmate and late husband, Richard Edwin Austin. Richard and Mary Jane spent their weekends bowling with friends and attending church. Together, they are rolling strikes in heaven. 

Mary Jane followed her passion and attended Leon’s Beauty School to study cosmetology. She touched the lives of many women in the community for over 40 years working at Leon’s Salon in Greensboro, making sure every client left with a smile. In her free time, Mary Jane loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for her family and baking cakes for her friends. 

Mary Jane is survived by her two loving daughters Shari Hubbard (Chuck) and Debbie Austin (Randy); her granddaughter Alicia Cassidy-Quate (TJ); and her great-grandchildren Salem & Finn who she adored. She is also survived by her sisters Ruth “Tom” Butler and Dorothy Blackman Tart, and numerous nieces & nephews whose love she carries with her still. 

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 25, 2023, at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel. Interment will follow at Guildford Memorial Park. A visitation will be held from 10:00 AM – 10:45 AM prior to the service at the funeral home.
