Mary Frances Sides

Mary Frances Transou Sides, 98, entered the more immediate presence of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 19, 2017. She was born in Winston-Salem, N.C. on April 22, 1919 to Gaither C. and Eva Lashmit Transou. She lived her entire life in Winston-Salem, graduating from Lewisville High School and working at Brown-Rodgers-Dixson Company until she married William C. Sides, Sr. (Bill) on September 27, 1941. They had sixty-nine wonderful years of marriage prior to his death in 2010. Mary Frances had a wonderful, caring nature and was always interested in hearing about what was important to the people in her life. She enjoyed having new experiences, meeting new people, visiting with friends, and especially appreciated spending time with her family at every opportunity. She loved growing flowers, making things with her hands, solving crossword puzzles and, especially, cooking. She was known for her cream cheese pound cake, her homemade pickles of all types, and her fresh coconut cake. In earlier years, she and Bill enjoyed traveling with family and friends. She always felt that her calling in life was to be a loving wife, nurturing mother and homemaker. Except for a brief period in the Methodist church after World War II, Mary Frances was a lifelong member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church where she served in many capacities, beginning at age fifteen as a primary department Sunday School teacher. She was a lovefeast Diener and the coordinator for the sanctuary flowers each Sunday for many years, following in her mother's footsteps with both of these activities. Into her late nineties, she continued to enjoy attending worship and Sunday School and participating in other church activities including making chicken pies, preferring to roll dough by hand rather than using a rolling machine. Only a broken wrist in January 2017 slowed her down for a while until her recent, sudden illness. Mary Frances is survived by her children William C. Sides, Jr. (Dawn), The Reverend Richard L. Sides (Elizabeth) and Eva Cathon ""Cathy"" Sides Roberts (Terry); eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her sister Jane Fowler; and her special friend and caregiver, Niki Moffett. The family would like to thank Niki for her years of loving service and expresses appreciation to the staff of At Your Place Companion Care for enabling Mary Frances to remain in her home. Funeral services will be held at New Philadelphia Moravian Church on Saturday, July 22 at 2 p.m., conducted by The Reverend Dr. Worth Green and The Reverend Joe Moore. Interment will follow the service in God's Acre. The family will receive friends in the Church Banquet Room following the interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sunnyside Ministry of the Moravian Church, 319 Haled Street, Winston-Salem, NC, 27127 or New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
