Mary Joyce Gann Smith

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Mary Joyce Gann Smith, 83, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mary was born January 4, 1933 in Stokes County to Ronald and Nellie Joyce Gann. Mary was a life-long member of Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church where she co-chaired the Homebound Extension Ministry for over 30 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all she met. Mary loved to shop and was a great bargain hunter! She especially loved to cook and share her meals with her family. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Davis Smith; and brother, Bernard Gann. Surviving are her children, Lynn (Rick) Parnell and Bernie (Teresa) Smith; 3 grandchildren, Neal (Lindsey) Parnell, Adam Moretz and Morgan (Cory) Cook; 3 great grandchildren, Blakely & Smith Parnell and Colby Cook; 3 brothers, Luke Gann, Danny (Mary) Gann, and Sandy (Jeanette) Gann; nieces and nephews, Lee Gann, Michael (Tracy) Gann, Sharon Gann, Sonny (Amy) Gann, John (Emily) Gann, Taylor, Megan, Eli, Madi, Ethan and Peyton Gann. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 9, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel with Rev. Jack Rose and Rev. Roy Cantrell officiating. Burial will follow at Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at the funeral home. The family would like to thank the many friends and relatives who have been so wonderful to carry Mom to church, meetings and other activities when we could not. We would also like to thank the staff of Palliative Care at Forsyth Medical Center for the tender care given to Mom in her final days.
