Mary Ruth Pilcher Spaugh

Mary Ruth Pilcher Spaugh, surrounded by her loving family, was received into the arms of her lord and savior, Jesus Christ, on May 3, 2017. Ruth was born on January 10, 1926 to Ambrose and Elizabeth Ann Foster Pilcher. After graduating from Old Town High School in 1944, Ruth enjoyed a wonderful 67 years of marriage with her husband, Dean. Throughout her life, Ruth was a member of Hope Moravian Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was actively involved in the Women's Fellowship Group. Naturally gifted with her hands, Ruth worked as a seamstress for over 30 years. Even after retirement, Ruth fulfilled her creative passions through making Christmas ornaments and Moravian Stars that were sold at Old Salem. Ruth also made surplice communion robes for Moravian pastors across the world. Ruth had a witty sense of humor that brought a smile to everyone she knew. Ruth was a devoted and loving mother to Dan (Patricia), Gerald (Barbara), and Max; grandma to Joshua, Christopher (Meredith), Jeffrey, Patrick, Tammy Watts Quesinberry (Jerry), and Tyler Watts; and great-grandma to Liam, Benjamin, Wesley, Katie, Lillie, Jack, and Kyler. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ilene; brother, Herman; husband, Dean; and oldest son, Dan. Ruth is also survived by her sister, Ferald Gray Nelson (Bobby). The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to caretakers Jana, Debbie, and Michelle; and the nurses and CNA's at Hospice and Palliative Care of Winston-Salem. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Hope Moravian Church (2759 Hope Church Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27127), with Rev. Andrew Heil officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 am.
