Mary Schmucker Van Zile, 96, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2024, at the Kate
B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in New Jersey on March 7, 1927, to the
late William Joseph and Margaret Shenise Schmucker. Mary loved her family greatly and was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, Grandma, Great-Grandma; and a good friend tomany. Her faith was strong and became evident as she used her gift of hospitality making many feel welcomed and special both in New Jersey and North Carolina.
She had a great sense of humor and was very witty. In New Jersey, she was a
member of the Kinnelon Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary for more than 50 years. She
enjoyed baking, sewing and was an avid bowler. Preceding her in death was her
husband, Clarence Van Zile; grandson, Steven Michael Stoess; two sisters, Peggy
Spreen and Jeanette Maros and two brothers, Thomas Schmucker and William
Schmucker, Jr. Surviving are her three children, Jean Stoess (Mike), Michael Van
Zile (Gail), and Sue Fye (Bob); four grandchildren, Kimberly Fournier (Andrew),
Zachary Fye, Nathan Fye (Sarah), and Tracy Bush; seven great-grandchildren,
Aidan, Elizabeth, Sarah, Emma, Mary, Patrick, and Jules; also surviving are several
nieces and nephews. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at a later
date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in loving memory of Mary to Bridges Church, 5131 Reynolda Rd. Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
