Matthew Jon Lockwood

Matthew Jon Lockwood, age 30, passed away tragically on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 1:19 PM while performing the linework he trained so diligently for. Born on April 10, 1995, in Florida, Matthew grew up in Mocksville, North Carolina, where he began shaping a life defined by dedication, adventure, and unshakable loyalty to those he loved. A proud Eagle Scout from Troop 778 in Clemmons, NC — guided by leaders such as Steve Burton, Rusty Russell, Greg Mills, and Jay Lancaster. Matthew found brotherhood, adventure, and a sense of purpose, and a dedication to service in the Boy Scouts he would carry through life. He embraced difficult challenges such as the legendary Philmont Scout Ranch and forged life-long friendships along the way, including a special bond with Robby Russell. It was during these years he earned the nickname “Matty” a name that grew dear to him and became a part of his identity, even in later years. In 2017, Matthew answered a higher calling and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as an 0311 Rifleman. He served with honor and distinction, deploying to Iraq in 2018 and later stationed at Twentynine Palms, California. He was a member of the USMC 3/7 Lima Company. He earned the rank of Corporal (E-4), a non-commissioned officer leading his very own squad of hearty Marines. He earned medals and accommodations during his military career, a testament to his discipline, skill, and dedication to service. After his military service, Matthew pursued a new challenge at the Northwest Lineman College in Edgewater, Florida. Following graduation, he began his career as an electrical lineman with Utility Lines Construction Services (ULCS) before joining Carolina Power & Signalization. Matthew was actively working toward his goal of becoming a Class-A Lineman, passionately committed to advancing in a field he deeply respected. Beyond his work and service, Matthew was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for health and fitness. He found joy in snowboarding, wakeboarding, and skateboarding. He also loved gaming on PCs he built himself and treasured time spent with friends or family. Whether that time be in the field, on a board, or behind a screen, Matthew approached life with consistency— a word that best defines who he was to those who knew him: a consistent son, brother, cousin, nephew, grandson, friend, and co-worker. He is survived by his loving mother, Gayle Lockwood; his brother, Jason Lockwood (Jason’s fiancé, Victoria Jessup); his sister, Rynae Lockwood; twin nephews, Samuel and Benjamin Lockwood; and his niece, Haylee; aunt Kim, uncle Eddie, and cousin, Lauryn McCleary. He was preceded in death by his father, Jon Bryan Lockwood; and his grandparents, Robert and Marilyn McHugh and grandmother, Phyllis Lockwood. Matthew’s life, though cut tragically short, was full of purpose, love, and light. He will be sorely missed, fondly remembered, and never forgotten by all who had the honor to know him. May his light shine on in every wire he touched and every heart he reached. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00PM Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with full military honors. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
