Maureen McElroy de Lyon

Maureen McElroy de Lyon, 89, of Kernersville went to be with her Lord, Sunday, March 19, 2017. She was born August 18, 1927 in Dundalk, Ireland, the daughter of Joseph and Blanche McElroy. She is preceded in death by her husband, Rene, her parents and her sister, Joan. She is survived by her sister Anne Eeles (Howard), her three sons, Terry (Miriam), Brian (Dawn) and Mark (Michele), and her four grandchildren, Michael, Thomas, Alex and Anna.

Maureen left Ireland as a young woman, living in London briefly before moving to the United States as an AMP, Incorporated employee. Her transfer to Harrisburg, PA enabled her to meet and marry her loving husband, Rene de Lyon. Maureen and Rene enjoyed time in Harrisburg, raising their young boys and making lifelong friends, before eventually moving to Winston-Salem, NC. After Rene's death, Maureen made a new life for herself, raising 3 boys on her own and going back to school.

Maureen was educated at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland and Salem College and Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. She earned a Masters in Education and spent many years as a Christian counselor, specializing in marital therapy. She was also a longtime volunteer counselor at Salem Pregnancy Care Center.

Maureen was a loving wife, mother and grandmother with a sharp wit and tremendous generosity. She loved counseling, the Catholic Church, her children and grandchildren, bacon, her friends, chocolate, Panera, Ben Carson, her heating pad and her 1988 Honda Civic (in no particular order.)

Memorial contributions may be made in Maureen's honor to Salem Pregnancy Center, 1342 Westgate Center Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 2 pm on Friday, March 24, 2017 at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 335 Springdale Ave., Winston-Salem, NC. Friends may visit the family prior to the service from 12:15 - 1:45 pm at the church. Interment will follow the service at Forsyth Memorial Park.
