Winston-Salem Mrs. Maxine McKaughn Mathis, 94, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Arbor Acres where she has been a resident for the past 17 years. She was born February 8, 1920 in Forsyth County to the late Armenius and Hettie Gentry McKaughn. Mrs. Mathis was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, was part of the Clay-Chandler Bible Class and a member of the W-S Elk's Ladies Auxiliary. Preceding her in death was her husband, John Rex Mathis, Sr. and two sisters and five brothers. Surviving is a son, John Rex Mathis, II (Lina) of King; daughter, Ann Mathis Lancaster (Harry) of Lexington; six grandchildren, Veronica Sabar, Gina Mathis, Amelia Sechrest, Craig Lancaster, John Rex Mathis, III and Pamela Presnell; also surviving are 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Arbor Acres Goodson Fellowship Hall with Rev. Doug Suggs and Rev. Craig Ford officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Arbor Acres Retirement Community, 1240 Arbor Rd. Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
