Melba Hicks Hemmings

Mrs. Melba Hicks Hemmings, 85, of Rural Hall passed away on Thursday, January, 21, 2016. She was born on May 24, 1930 in Kings Mountain, NC the daughter of the late Joseph Garson Hicks and Minnie Ware Hicks. Mrs. Hemmings graduated from Mars Hill and Carson-Newman Colleges and was a school teacher. She was involved with the Girls Scouts at Camp Shirley Rogers and was later the Director of the Child Care Centers at two churches. Mrs. Hemmings was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Rural Hall, where she was on the Child Care Board, taught the Semper Fidelis Sunday School Class, WMU Director, sang in the choir and worked with the Vacation Bible School. She retired as an administrative assistant at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center with 30 years of service. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Perry W. Hemmings, a step-daughter, Nancy Owens, six sisters, Nina H. Parks, Verna H. Pressley, Lillian H. Dwyer, Margretta H. Blanton, Rebecca H. Stewart and Shirley Adams and four brothers, John, Charles, Herbert and Bob. Mrs. Hemmings is survived by her two step-children, Lanny Hemmings of Texas and Althea Sine of Florida, 16 step-grandchildren, many step-great-grandchildren and a brother, Jack Hicks. Funeral services for Mrs. Hemmings will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 28, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall with Rev. Lanny Hemmings officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. Mrs. Hemmings will lie-in-state from 1:00-2:00 prior to the service at the funeral home. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
