Merita "Rita" Hicks

Mrs. Merita ""Rita"" Hartman Hicks, 92, of Winston-Salem, passed away Thursday, August 19, 2016 at Homestead Hills Assisted Living Facility. She was born in Roanoke, VA to the late Earl M. Hartman and Alma Jones Hartman. She was employed by the United States Navy during the World War II at the U.S. Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Virginia and by the Veteran's Administration in Winston-Salem. Rita volunteered at Forsyth Memorial Hospital as a Pink Lady for 20 years and was a Licensed Practical Nurse. She successfully completed People's Law School sponsored by the North Carolina Academy of Triad Lawyers. Rita was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church, Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry Hughes Hicks. Rita is survived by a son Harry H. Hicks, Jr. of Charlotte; three daughters Patsy H. Ballard of Ansonville, Shirley H. Kincer of Winston-Salem, and Nancy H. Benson of Lexington; nine grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, August 22, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Richard Hardee officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek. Memorials may be made to Kate B.
