Michael “Denny” Wayne Shaffer, age 77, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, went to be with the Lord on December 19, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Denny was born on April 25, 1948, in Winston-Salem to Arthur Shaffer and Thelma Taylor Shaffer. As his father served in the military, Denny spent much of his childhood living in various states, including time in Germany. From an early age, he developed a love for baseball, both playing and later coaching.
On December 18, 1982, Denny married the love of his life, Paulette Neola Smith, and together they shared 43 wonderful years of marriage. He is survived by his beloved wife Paulette; son Brian Shaffer (Hayley); daughter Amanda Lucas Crider (Adam); grandchildren Grayson Spaugh, Kaylin Bates, Alyssa Lucas, Brandon Lucas, and Lucas Shaffer; and great-grandchildren Hudson Spaugh and Lucy Bates. He shared a special bond with his niece, Cheryl Bowman, whose unwavering support, laughter, and love brought him great comfort and joy.
Denny dedicated most of his life to his career as a licensed Heating and Air Conditioning technician, beginning in the trade at just 16 years old. In 1983, he founded Cool Breeze Heating and Air Conditioning Company, faithfully serving customers across North Carolina for 42 years. His strong work ethic, integrity, and commitment to his customers earned him lasting respect in the community. Through his work and friendships, Denny touched countless lives across North Carolina.
Outside of work, Denny enjoyed playing softball, golfing, fishing, and spending time with friends and family. He will be remembered for his generous spirit, his willingness to help anyone in need, and his fun-loving nature. Denny loved to joke, laugh, and bring joy to those around him.
Denny’s faith was a guiding light in his life, and he found comfort in knowing he would one day be reunited with loved ones in heaven. His legacy of hard work, kindness, and laughter will live on in all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In addition to his immediate family, Denny is survived by his brother, Arthur “Skip” Sweet Shaffer; step-brother, William “Bill” Shaffer; and step-sisters, Kathy Shaffer and Karen Shaffer. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Charles “Chuck” Shaffer and Steve Shaffer.
The family will receive friends on December 23, 2025, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will be held immediately following at 2:00pm.
