Mildred White went home to be with her Lord and Savior on April 18, 2026. She was born in her home to Minnie Pope White and Delmer V. White. Mildred was the second of four children.
Mildred graduated from Griffith High School where she was Valedictorian of her class. At the age of 16, she began playing the piano and organ at her home church, Hopewell Moravian. Mildred continued to serve God with her talents as pianist and organist for over 70 years at Hopewell, Community Fellowship Moravian, and other Moravian churches in the area. She always volunteered her time because she believed God wanted her to offer her gifts for Him.
Upon graduation from high school, she spent the first years of her working life helping her father run his service station, furniture, and grocery store on South Main Street. She worked there until her mother needed Mildred to become her full-time caregiver.
After Mildred’s mother passed away, she was employed by the Moravian Church Southern Province as Secretary for the Women's Board. She greatly enjoyed getting to know the Moravian ministers and members of the Women’s Fellowship during this time.
As a member of Hopewell, she served on the Board of Elders, Women’s Fellowship, teacher of the Adult Sunday Class and member of the Handbell Choir. When she was not working and serving in church, she could be found enjoying her flowers or working in her vegetable garden. Both brought her great joy.
Mildred loved to travel including trips to Israel, Europe, Canada and the Bahamas. She enjoyed traveling with groups, meeting people and making new friends along the way. She shared the love of Christ with all who encountered her and she truly believed in the saving grace that salvation brings. Reading, Sudoku and word jumbles were part of her daily pastimes well into her 90’s.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, brother John, brother Denver M. White and sisters in law Sue White and Jewell White.
Left to cherish her memory and legacy of devotion to family are her brother Ivey L. White, nieces Teresa White, Cherry Kiser (Ron), and Debra Hazeltine (Craig), nephews, “Mossy” White (Paula) and Craig White (Vicky), one great niece, 4 great nephews, 3 great-great nieces, and 3 great-great nephews.
The family would like to extend special thanks to those who cared for Mildred while she was in her home, and especially Vienna Village, for the excellent care, love, and support they provided.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Salem Cemetery, 301 Cemetery Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. There will be no formal visitation held.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Pleasant Fork Church in care of Teresa White, 4545 Follansbee Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.
