Mrs. Myra C. Grant, 83, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. She was born on February 13, 1935 in Motherwell, Scotland, the daughter of James and Janet Dykes Cowan. Myra, at the age of 16, became a children's nurse in London, Fort William and other towns in Scotland. She took care of children at Boarding Schools, Orphanages and Hotels in post-war Britain. Myra immigrated to Washington D.C. in 1961 as a Governess to the Lewis Family and their three boys. It was in 1963 in Washington D.C. that she met her future husband, E. Carter Grant at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church and they were wed in November of the same year. They moved to Charlotte in 1968 and lived there until 1985, when they moved to Winston-Salem. In 2011, she moved to Arbor Acres. Myra volunteered at Arbor Acres, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and Calvary Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, E. Carter Grant in 2007. She is survived by two daughters, Ruth Cameron Pierce (Richard) of Charlotte and Alice Grant Hogans (Daniel) of Arlington, VA; a sister, Jean Gillespie (Ronald) of Motherwell, Scotland; two grandchildren, James and Catherine Hogans; a brother-in-law, Dr. W.J. Grant of Winston-Salem; nieces and nephews, Joyce Gillespie of Edinburgh, Scotland, Dr. Robert and Laura Dillard of Winston-Salem and W.J. and Debbie Grant, III of Easley, SC. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 12, 2018 in Piner Hall at Arbor Acres, with Rev. R. Craig Ford officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Resident Assistance Fund of Arbor Acres Retirement Community, 1240 Arbor Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
