Mrs. Nancy Potter SanFilippo, 87, passed away peacefully unto the Lord at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on April 7, 2018 after a period of declining health. She was born in Winston-Salem, NC and was a graduate of Reynolds High School. After her graduation from Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, she moved to New Jersey to pursue a career in teaching. She taught in elementary schools in both East Orange and Livingston, NJ where she was beloved by students, parents, and staff alike. Within one week of arriving in NJ, she met the love of her life, Joe, and they were married within the year. They experienced a rich and wonderful life together, filled with family and friends, frequent adventures into New York City, travels throughout the US and Europe, and satisfying careers. After retiring to NC, Nancy and Joe were active members of the Jonestown Civic Club. Nancy was a dedicated volunteer at the YMCA of Clemmons where she helped organize many senior activities for which she received the Volunteer of the Year Award. She also founded several bridge clubs in the area, teaching dozens of newcomers with her infectious enthusiasm. In addition, she enjoyed volunteering with students at Lewisville Elementary School, children at her church, and staff at the Clemmons Branch of the Forsyth County Library. As her health failed over the last year, Nancy responded with her characteristic strength, acceptance, peace, faith, gratitude, and sense of humor, and the last weeks were sacred and precious with family and friends. She instilled in her own children and grandchildren a love of family; deep compassion for and service to others; the joy of learning; art and music appreciation; a strong and abiding faith; thrill of travel and adventure, and a sense of humor and fun in all things. She will be greatly missed. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Joseph SanFilippo; her parents, Jack and Chacy Gillespie Potter; and her pets, Josie and Jacob. She will be lovingly remembered by her family: children Anthony (Hope) SanFilippo of Shawnee, PA and Chacy SanFilippo (J.L. Wakefield) of Winston-Salem; grandchildren John SanFilippo of Denver, CO and Katie SanFilippo of Shawnee, PA; sisters Rose Potter Garvey and Jackie Potter Warner; a host of nieces and nephews; dear friends, Anne Robertson and Frankie Jones; and her beloved cat, Matilda. A service of remembrance and celebration officiated by the Reverend Anthony SanFilippo will be held Tuesday, April 24, at 11 a.m. at Hayworth Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance, NC with a reception to follow. A private burial will be held in the afternoon at Forsyth Memorial Park.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to her devoted caregivers whom she loved dearly: Gina (aka Agnes); Bonita; Pam; Shanise (aka Evil Knievel); and Cindi. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC, 27103 in gratitude for their loving care of Nancy or to the Clemmons Branch of the Forsyth County Library, 3554 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC 27012.
