The world lost a beautiful soul, Nancy Belle Elliott Vanhoy, on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, as she passed away peacefully at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Nancy was born in Forsyth County, NC, on February 1, 1933, to the late Lucy Ellen Martin and Thomas Earle Elliott.
Nancy graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1951. She enjoyed working for Mother and Daughter Department Store in Winston-Salem as an accountant until she started her new career as a mother and homemaker. Like her middle name, she was a true southern "Belle" with the most caring heart and was always putting others first! Nancy was known as Mrs. Hallmark. She faithfully sent thoughtful cards for all occasions to everyone she knew, never missing an important date.
She served her community as a volunteer for various associations and charities for many years. Nancy was a certified horticulturist which was evident by the landscape garden creations that surrounded the home place. One of her many talents was displayed by her beautiful flowerpot arrangements. Nancy was a wonderful cook, using the fresh vegetables that came from her and Joe's bountiful vegetable gardens. Nancy also had an immense love for nature, and animals, especially cats and bird watching.
Nancy was on a local bowling league for many years and an avid sports enthusiast. She was a Wake Forest Demon Deacon inside and out having season tickets for many years.
The love of her life, after family, was the beach. It was her happy place. Joe and Nancy enjoyed wonderful years since 1950s on Topsail Island, eventually settling there as the family’s second home with countless hours of fishing, shelling and enjoying the beach life with friends and family. She loved cruising the intracoastal waterways and boating on Badin Lake.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph Vanhoy; her sister, Linda Elliott Sprinkle; and her brother, Harold Elliott. She leaves behind her children, Kathy (Harold) Joyce of Palmetto, FL, and Jennifer (Joe) Richardson of Winston-Salem, NC; sister-in-law, Peggy Elliott; extended family; and many dear friends.
A special acknowledgment to Sally Vandiver, a lifelong friend and sister-in-law, who with their husbands, shared many wonderful years of unforgettable adventures and travels. We would also like to extend a special thank you to a longtime family friend, Phyllis and husband Larry Rumple, for their constant support; and to Nancy’s cousin, Jane Scott, of Wilmington NC, who always considered Nancy a second mom to her.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00PM on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at Gardens of Memory – Walkertown. A family and friends visitation will be held in the fellowship hall of Oak Grove Moravian Church, 120 Hammock Farm Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105, following the graveside service.
Due to Nancy’s devotion to the Oak Grove Moravian Church community, we request in lieu flowers, please make a donation to the church, 120 Hammock Farm Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105, or to a charity of your choice in her memory.
Nancy's family would like to extend a thank you to the staff of Walnut Ridge Assisted Living in Walnut Cove for her care over the last 5 years.
