Nell Hicks Jackson

Mrs. Nell Hicks Jackson, 89, passed away July 21, 2014 at her home after several years of declining health. Mrs. Jackson was born June 20, 1925 to the late Robert F. and Grace B. Hicks. She attended John W. Hanes High School and graduated in 1942 at the age of 17. Upon her graduation, she was awarded the Montague Medal for Scholarship. At that time the medal was awarded to the one student from all the Winston-Salem high schools who had achieved the highest four year average. Her sister Ivis had received this honor the previous year. Shortly after graduating Nell was hired by Piedmont Federal Savings & Loan (Now Piedmont Federal Savings Bank) as teller/stenographer. During her tenure with Piedmont she studied at Wake Forest University and Salem College. She earned the Achievement Award and the standard diploma from The Institute for Financial Education. Nell was elected Assistant Secretary in 1972 and in 1974 was elected Corporate Secretary. Although she retired in June of 1984 after 42 years she continued to serve the association in matters relating to the Board of Directors through the end of the year. Nell was a member of First Baptist Church and sand in the choir as long as her health permitted. She also worked with the G.A. (Girls Auxiliary) of the church. Nell loved to travel, play bridge, and was an avid reader. In addition to her parents Nell was preceded in death by her sister, Ivis Hicks Harrell. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Alan C. Jackson. She is also survived by her nephews, Robert Harrell and wife Lisa of Winston-Salem and Thomas Harrell and wife Pam of Melbourne, Fl.; grand niece, Kathryn H. Martin and husband Jeff of Greenville, SC and grand nephew Jeffrey Harrell of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held at 2:00p.m., Friday, July 25, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Carolyn Williams Ashburn officiating. A private graveside service will be held prior to the memorial service at Forsyth Memorial Park.
