Nellie Whitener

Nellie Love Whitener, 85, went home to be with her Savior and Lord on November 21, 2017. She was born on February 21, 1932 to the late Richard Glass Love and Mattie Salmons Love. She was a member of Goodwill Baptist Church, the Friendship Sunday School Class and the "Keen Agers Group". She graduated from Mineral Springs High School, Class of 1950 and worked at Western Electric for Bell Laboratories until 1961. She was a part-time secretary at Marvin United Methodist Church in the 1980's.

On December 15, 1950, she married Marion Chambers Whitener, Jr. (Sonny) and they were blessed with 67 years of marriage. Mrs. Whitener was preceded in death by her brother, R. J. Love and her sister, Hallie Hicks. Survivors include three daughters, Donna Whitener of Clemmons, Wendy Rierson (Randy) of Walnut Cove and Gina Cooper (Todd) of Charlotte; her grandchildren, Robert Kent Williard, Rebekah Grace Rierson, Ryan Glenn Rierson, and Mason Todd Cooper; her brother, Tommy Love (Joyce); her sisters, Lucy Reich and Delphia Reid (Gray); her sister in law, Joyce Ann Love; a very special niece, Danielle Palmer. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Nellie loved to read, work crossword puzzles and watch UNC Tarheels basketball. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends at Tuckertown Lake. She loved to water ski and in later years liked to watch her grandchildren wake boarding, surf boarding and tubing. She always had a garden and loved those homegrown tomato sandwiches.

A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Friday, November 24, 2017 at Goodwill Baptist Church, 3110 Piney Grove Rd., Kernersville, NC 27284 with Pastor Greg Mullis, the Rev. Ray Harvey and the Rev. Jack Elliott officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. The family would like to thank everyone for their kindness and prayers and the staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for their special care. The family request that memorials be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
