Nial Patrick Murray

Nial P. Murray M.D., 88, at Pennybyrn at Maryfield, Highpoint, NC.
A proud, happy, and charming Irishman, he had the ""gift of the gab"". As he often said there were no awkward silences when he was around. Born in Downpatrick, Co. Down, Ireland, he attended St. Mary's College, Dublin and National University of Ireland earning a medical degree. He practiced medicine in London, Liverpool, and Edinburgh, UK. He moved to the USA in 1965, practicing in Boston at The Children's Hospital, briefly in Memphis, TN, and back to Boston at the Beth Israel Hospital where he was an associate Professor of Medicine (Anesthesiology) at Harvard University. In 1980, he married his beloved Marlene. In 1983, they moved to Winston-Salem, NC, where he worked in the Department of Anesthesiology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center until his retirement in 1989. They moved to Florida where he volunteered at St.Paul's Catholic Church and Leesburg General Hospital. He and Marlene were also active in their Waterwood Community Association. They moved back to Winston-Salem in 2001 settling in Merion Court. Following Marlene's death in 2009, he moved to Pennybyrn at Maryfield, Highpoint, NC, run by the Poor Sisters of the Mother of God, natives of Ireland. He was happy at Pennybyrn, comforted by the Sisters, the excellent staff, and his wonderful caretaker, Beatrice Cannon. He was predeceased by his wife Marlene, two sisters and four brothers. He is survived by his niece Darina Lynch of Palmyra, PA, nieces Maire Lynch, Rita Lynch, Sheila O'Sullivan, Catherine Kelly, and Rosemary Lynch (all in Ireland), as well as nieces Margaret Murray, Susan Cartwright, Ann Murray, Clare Clarke, Helen Phillips and nephews Colum Murray, Andrew Murray, Michael Murray, Kieran Murray (all in England) and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of St Leo the Great, 335 Springdale Avenue, Winston-Salem, NC 27104, on Friday January 29, 2016 at 11:00am followed by interment at the church.
