Mr. Norris Joshua Walbert, 87, departed this life on January 13, 2014 in his home. Norris was born in Baltimore, MD on January 30, 1926 to Norris (Sr.) and Frances Walbert. Norris served in the South Pacific during WWII and received the Purple Heart for his wounds received at Guadalcanal. Shortly after receiving his Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps, Norris joined Morrell Park American Legion Post 137. His outstanding legion career spans more than sixty years; serving with distinction at the local, state and national level. His comrades at American Legion Post 137 recognized his many accomplishments by awarding Norris with an Honorary Life Membership. He also received life time membership with Amvets, VFW and Marine Corps League. Norris was a member of the 40/8 and also distinguished himself as a member and Chairman of Maryland's Charlotte Hall State Veterans Home Commission and the Joint Veterans Council. Norris retired from the National Security Agency and the Baltimore City War Memorial Commission. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Tamyra Cox Walbert. He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Marie C. Walbert; a sister, Dorothy Rimbach (Harvey); daughters, Deborah Hemingway (David) and Frances Collier (Jim); sons, Christopher Walbert and Josh Walbert (Dan Dreyer). Eight grandchildren, Wendy Hemingway, Susan Isebrand, Lara Goodman, Toby Cox, Christopher N. Walbert, Elizabeth Walbert, Gordon Collier and Carrie Wimer; 10 great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Daniel, Naomi, Sara, Graydon, Darrin, Leyla, Kelsey, Abbie and Mason. A memorial service with military rites will be conducted 6:00 p.m. Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall with Pastor Andrew Wild officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to: Senior Services, Winston-Salem, NC, Hospice and Palliative Care Center, Winston-Salem, NC or Alzheimer's Association. The family extends special thanks to the compassionate care extended to Norris by the nurses and staff with Senior Services, Tender Care and Hospice and Palliative Care.
