Odie Lee Skidmore (70) of Winston-Salem went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on November 26, 1954, at Fort Belvoir Military Hospital in Fairfax, VA, to the late William T. and Connie D. Skidmore. Odie was a graduate of Parkland High School, as well as a proud Mountaineer graduate from Appalachian State University. He married at the age of 23 to his loving wife, Cheryl Goins Skidmore. They were blessed with four children: Melea, Meagan (Ezekiel), Mari, and Micah. Together they shared 9 grandchildren: Chase (Ashlee), Hunter (Kaitlin), Lex, Shauna (Jordan), Keenan, William, Ryder, Cassidy, and Ansley; and two great-grandchildren, Oaklee and Wyatt, as well as a significant number of grand animals.
To know him is to know his love for the Lord, his family, softball, and politics. Odie spent a great number of years in the family business, Skidmore’s Office Products; it was his pride and joy. This rooted the opportunity to reach the community in different ways while gaining many friendships. Odie later worked for the W-S Journal, Trellis, and even tried his thumb in the real estate industry. He was a social butterfly. He knew no stranger. Everywhere he went, Odie would know someone and have a prolonged visit, carrying on a conversation, no matter the time of day. He enjoyed calling and touching base with everyone, including extended family members and fraternity brothers, especially KB and Craver (Kenneth Bost and JR Craver). He put in the work necessary to keep a connection with people. Odie was a family man. Not only was he an amazing husband and father, and he was also an amazing nephew, cousin, brother, and uncle. He loved his siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews and had a special, individual bond with each of them. With his massive heart, he loved far beyond family ties. He adopted love for so many kids over the years as they became family through the game of softball and friendships; one chosen daughter, Jennifer Bullins, and a bonus granddaughter, Adilyn Bullins, both of whom he loved proudly.
A private funeral service for the family will be held by Pastor Bill McKenzie of Pinedale Christian Church at Hayworth-Miller in Winston-Salem. A public visitation will take place from 6-8pm on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel for family, friends, and acquaintances.
On behalf of Odie, his family would like to express gratitude and thankfulness to all the hands and hearts that managed his care throughout this journey. A special thank you to Jason Jones, MD, and Alicia, RN of G.A.P.; Mekesha Senter, NP of Dr. Kilby’s Office; Nyra, RN, and Miko, RN, both from Forsyth Medical Center. Each of you provided exceptional care that stands out far beyond your job duties. Thank you.
Odie went home to be with Jesus while singing:
“When we all get to heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the Victory!”
