Olive Irogene Poore Epperson

Olive Irogene Poore Epperson, 86, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on December 8, 2016. Appreciated for her gentle spirit by all who met her, she was born February 7, 1930 in Mt. Airy, NC, as one of Charles Franklin and Etta Marshall Poore's eight children. After the untimely death of her mother, she lived with most of her siblings at the Pythian Home in Clayton, NC. She graduated from Clayton High School and three years later from Pfeiffer Junior College, Albamarle, NC. In 1951 she married Harry Arnold Epperson Jr., a WWII veteran. She worked at WPAQ radio station in Mt. Airy until she and her husband founded a radio station, WPVA, in an old house in Petersburg, VA, which they called ""the Musical Mansion."" She was also instrumental in starting radio stations in Wilson, NC and Luray, VA. Mrs. Epperson enjoyed sewing, painting, reading, and spending time with family. For over thirty years, she taught the five-year-old's Sunday School at Salem Baptist Church in Winston Salem, where she attended regularly. Mrs. Epperson is survived by three children and their families: Ruth and Steve Mathis, the parents of Sarah and David (Kelsey); Jan and Mandel Owens, the parents of Samuel and Benjamin; as well as Arnie and TC Epperson, the parents of Christiana, Harrison, and Tyndale. She leaves behind one beloved sister, Frankie Ruth McAdams and numerous cherished nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and four sisters. Family will receive visitors at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, Monday, December 12, from 6:00-8:00 pm. A service celebrating Mrs. Epperson's life will be held at Salem Baptist Church Tuesday December 13, at 1:00 pm. A graveside service will follow at 4:00 pm at Unity Church on Unity Church Rd. Ararat, VA, 24053. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorials to Salem Baptist Church, 429 S. Broad St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
