Opal Dale Dutton Carter, 85, of Kernersville, NC went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born to the late Albert Dutton and Lettie Johnson Dutton on March 4, 1941, in Blount County, Alabama.
Opal graduated from grade school in Hayden, Alabama. After school she went on to marry the love of her life, Jim. Opal spent the next 28 years of her life as a faithful military spouse. She enjoyed many things such as gardening, porch sitting, and attending church. Although by far her favorite thing to do was to eat at Fitz on Main in downtown Kernersville. Opal was a beloved fur mom and fur grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family and being called grandma by everyone she met. The memories she leaves behind will be forever cherished by all those who loved her.
In addition to her parents, Opal was preceded in death by her brother, Roy Dutton; and sister, Marie Nix.
She is survived by her loving husband, James “Jim” Carter; children, Danny Carter (Rhonda), Perry Carter (Michelle), and Karen Brendle (Willard); sister, Betty Blackwood; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 7:00pm on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Officiating the service is Rev. Clayton Smith. Burial will take place at a later date at Oak Grove Batist Cemetery in Hayden, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you please make a donation in honor of Opal to a local shelter or animal rescue of your choice.
