""Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."" Isaiah 26:3.
Opal Louise Hawks Stewart, daughter of the late Lloyd H. Hawks and Grace Leftwich Hawks, wife of the late Roland W. Stewart, mother of the late Larry G. Stewart and Marlyce , grandmother of Amy, Katie and Brent, great-grandmother of Taran, Connor, Linley, and Jackson left this life on Sunday, May 17, 2015 just as morning was breaking. She leaves family and friends just temporarily and will meet them again soon on the other side in God's presence.
Born in West Virginia, Opal grew up in Lambsburg, Virginia where she knew and eventually married Roland Stewart in 1948. After the birth of the children, the family left Mt. Airy, NC, moving to Newport News, VA back to Lambsburg, and finally Winston-Salem in 1958. Opal was a meticulous homemaker, with times when she also worked outside the home. In Winston-Salem, she worked in the cafeteria at South Fork Elementary School for several years. It was her privilege to be a member of Hanes Baptist Church for more than 50 years where she treasured the love of her church family.
Those who left before her were her husband, son, brothers, Carroll Hawks, L.H. Hawks, Darrell Hawks and sister Barbara Gray. Remaining here are daughter, Marlyce Stewart Vaughn (Randy) of Clemmons; grandchildren, Amy Vaughn Creighton (Matt) of Hickory, Katie Vaughn Cunningham (Ben) of Granite Falls and Brent Vaughn of Greensboro. Opal's great-grandchildren are Taran, Connor, and Linley Creighton of Hickory and just-arrived Jackson Cunningham of Granite Falls. Also remaining here are her much loved brother, Charles Hawks of Lambsburg, Virginia, sister, Lois Hawks King of Mt. Airy, and sisters-in-law Carol Hawks of Lambsburg, Virginia and Helen Hawks of Mt. Airy. Opal was favored with multiple nieces and nephews that were dear to her. Family was very important, and she always treasured the love and time spent with them. A day spent with family was usually summed up with the words, ""It was a good day!""
It has also been Opal's joy to love and be loved by so many close friends who have been God's hands, eyes, ears, and feet. She considered them one of God's very best gifts in life and was so very thankful for them.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2015 from 6 pm to 8 pm. A service to remember Opal will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Jason Holley, Pastor Larry Walker and Phillip Smith, Opal's nephew, officiating. Entombment will be at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 and Piedmont Down Syndrome Support Network, 4715 Yadkinville Road #144, Pfafftown, NC 27040.
