Othel 'Travis' Smith

Othel ""Travis"" Smith, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 6, 2013 with his wife of 57 years, Peggy, by his side. He was born in Stokes County on September 30, 1937 to the late Beadie Joyce Smith and Arnold Gray Smith. Travis was a member of Buffalo Primitive Baptist Church. He was a professional bowler who lived to bowl and was elected to the Piedmont Bowling Association Hall of Fame in April 2002. In addition to his parents, Travis was preceded in death by his beloved son, Randy. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Peggy Smith, who has stood by his side and cared for him during his extended illness. He is also survived by two brothers: Ralph (Sue) Smith and Larry Smith; one sister-in-law, Janet (Bill) Gibson; two brothers-in-law: Billy Joe Smith and J.V. (Nina) Smith; many special nieces and nephews; and also two life-long friends, Coy Lawson and Chester Hill. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 9 at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with Elder Rodney Marshall & Elder Scotty Marshall officiating. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 8 at the funeral home. The family would like to thank the many organizations who aided in the care of Travis during his illness: Hospice of Forsyth County, Meals on Wheels, The Sheppard Center and Senior Services.
