Ozelma Gillespie

Mrs. Ozelma Mattie Burwell Gillespie, 99, passed away at her home on Saturday, May 19, 2019. She was born on June 8, 1919 the daughter of the late Willis G. Burwell and Vera Mae Hall Burwell. Mrs. Gillespie was a member of Robinhood Baptist Church. She loved to read, work in her flower gardens and bake for her family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert William Gillespie; a grandson, Ryan Gillespie; two brothers and a sister. She is survived by two sons, Jerry Gillespie (Brenda) of Tobaccoville and Ken Gillespie (Pam) of New Bern; a daughter, Karen Eshback (Pete) of Germanton; a grandson, Chris Gillespie of Lewisville; and her only remaining sister, Patricia Owens of Germanton. Mrs. Gillespie is also survived by several nieces, nephews and extended family. A memorial service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall with Rev. John Hackworth, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 prior to the service at the funeral home. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Trellis Supportive Care and Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for the love and care shown during Mrs. Gillespie’s time of need. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Winston-Salem Rescue Mission or Trellis Supportive Care.
