Pearl Reaves

Pearl Gilmore Reaves, 94, passed peacefully on August 16, 2017. Pearl had a servant's heart; and she faithfully served God, her family, and her community wherever she saw a need. She was a long-time member of Northwest Baptist Church in Winston-Salem where she served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, Baptismal Committee member, nursery volunteer, Lord's Supper Committee member, and an active member of Women's Missionary Union. She was an active volunteer throughout the community for such organizations as the Association for Retarded Citizens, the Enrichment Center, the Shepherd's Center, Crisis Control, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and Kernersville Medical Center. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved her family unconditionally. When challenges occurred she met them with boldness, grace, and faith setting an excellent example for her children. Upon spending time with Pearl, it was clear that her love for the Lord directed her daily path. She was warm and caring, and God's love showed through her. She adjusted to whatever came her way, and found a positive light in every situation. Even as dementia began to cloud her thoughts, she retained her delightful sense of humor and endeared herself to those around her. At times she was playfully sassy in a refreshing and amusing way. One of Pearl's favorite pastimes was simply listening as her children and grandchildren shared the events of their day-to-day lives. "Tell me everything that's happened to you since the last time I saw you," she would say and delighted in hearing every detail. It was easy to feel special around Pearl, for she treated everyone as a valued treasure. Pearl found joy in all of God's creation. Pearl Reaves is preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Murchison Reaves, Sr., a son, Mark Douglas Reaves, three brothers, Benjamin Gray Gilmore, Harry Monroe Gilmore, Raleigh Bethay Gilmore, and parents, Jesse Monroe Gilmore and Lottie Belle Cox Gilmore. She is survived by three sisters, Dalma Gilmore Holt, Edna Gilmore Calder Johnson, and Molly Gilmore Jacobs, one daughter, Shirley Faye Reaves Prince, and four sons, Daniel Murchison Reaves, Jr. and wife, Vicky, Bradford Park Reaves and wife, Anne, Allen Dale Reaves and companion, Noriko Itakura, and Richard Gilmore Reaves and wife, Patrice. She was blessed with eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Jeffrey Prince and wife, Karon, Martin Prince, Abigail Reaves Polos and husband, Michael, Emma Reaves and husband, William Caldwell, Maya Reaves, Christina Reaves Diamond and husband, Matthew, Ashley Reaves, William Reaves, Colin Prince, and Spencer Polos. The celebration and commemoration of the life of Pearl Reaves, a child of Christ, will be held at Hayworth-Miller Chapel, Silas Creek Parkway, at 2 PM on Saturday, August 19. Visitation with the family will be immediately before the service from 1-2 PM. A short graveside service will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
