Peggy Ann Johnson Vestal peacefully left this earth on the morning of Monday, September 1st, 2025. She was born in Yadkin County, NC, on January 30, 1935, and was blessed to celebrate her 90th birthday earlier this year surrounded by family and friends. Peggy was the beloved daughter of Kye and Nellie Mae Johnson and a proud graduate of West Yadkin High School. In 1953, she married the love of her life, Donald Gray Vestal, and together they made their home in Lewisville.
Peggy was a devoted member of Lewisville Baptist Church, where she joyfully sang in the choir, served faithfully in Girls in Action, and later taught a ladies’ Sunday School class for many decades.
Peggy was deeply proud of her career with the City of Winston-Salem, where she worked full-time at the Benton Convention Center and part-time at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum Complex. She also found joy and purpose in helping others through her work as an independent tax preparer.
Peggy will be remembered as a caring and thoughtful mother, grandmother, “grandy,” and friend—someone who consistently placed others’ needs before her own. Her warm smile, kind words, and steadfast encouragement touched all who knew her and will be dearly missed.
Her unwavering faith carried her through life’s joys and sorrows, including the passing of her cherished husband on November 7, 1983. She was also preceded in death by her brothers R.F. Johnson, Fred Johnson (Lillie Bell), and Harold Clay Johnson; and her sisters Sue Cox and Gerry Holbrook.
She is survived by her daughter, Luann Hamby; her sons Mitchell Vestal (Stephanie), Chuck Vestal (Shelley), and Danny Vestal (Stacey); eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to her dedicated caregivers, whose compassion, kindness, and tender care provided comfort and dignity in recent months.
Visitation to be held at Hayworth-Miller in Lewisville from 5pm – 7pm Friday, September 5th with a funeral service at Lewisville Baptist Church on Saturday, September 6th at 11am. Graveside service will follow immediately after.
Now healed and whole, Peggy rests in the eternal presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ—rejoicing in the peace and joy found only in Him. Her life was a true testament to faith, love, and devotion, and her legacy will live on forever in the hearts of those who loved her. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lewisville Baptist Church, Loving Lewisville Fund, 125 Lewisville-Clemmons Rd., Lewisville, NC 27023.
