Penny Denise Cranfill Smith

Penny Denise Cranfill Smith, 64, of Kernersville, NC passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at her home. She was born on September 17, 1961, to Pattie Hubbard Cranfill and the late Harold Dean Cranfill in Forsyth County.

Penny worked for Duke Energy for 47 years as a senior work management specialist after being hired directly out of high school. She was a Godly woman who loved her church. Penny enjoyed volunteering her time, cooking, and love for all her church friends. Penny especially cherished the time she spent with her beloved grandchildren. She constantly stayed involved in all their activities.

In addition to her mother, Penny is survived by her loving husband, A.B. Smith, Jr.; sons, Shane Routh (Hannah), and Josh Routh (Carly); stepdaughter, Jennifer Coffer; grandchildren, Jason, Jacob, Jackson C., Savannah, Jackson R., Charlotte, Ember, Elijah, and Lucy; two great-grandchildren; sister, Mitzi Bennett (Bob); and numerous special nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Kernersville Wesleyan Church. Officiating the service is Pastor Travis Shannon. The family will receive friends from 12:00pm to 1:45pm before the service. The burial will follow at Mt. Gur Cemetery in Kernersville.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to the Dr. Leo Record Fellowship Sunday School Class in honor of Penny at 930 N. Main Street, Kernersville, NC 27284.
