Phyllis Rowe Mecham

Beloved wife, mother, sister, Grammy and friend, Phyllis Rowe Mecham peacefully departed this life on Sunday, November 20, 2016. She was born October 12, 1948 in Winston-Salem to the late Jason and Edith Leonard Rowe. She grew up attending Griffith School and was in the first graduating class of Parkland High School in 1966. In November 1963, a love that spanned a lifetime and beyond began when Phyllis met Vern Mecham. Five years later, with Vern on crutches from an injury in Vietnam, they were married on March 23, 1968 at Hopewell Moravian Church. They ""always knew they would be together forever and a day."" They were sealed in the Washington DC LDS Temple in October 1978. Throughout her life, Phyllis served faithfully in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served 14 ½ years as the Winston-Salem Stake Young Women's President. She also served in the Primary, Relief Society and Sunday School organizations. She blessed the lives of many with her leadership, love, and kindness. Phyllis worked at RJ Reynolds, AdType, and Wake Forest University. Her work always demonstrated excellence, and she was a beloved colleague. Phyllis raised three boys and spent hours watching baseball and basketball and endlessly typing reports and preparing projects for her sons. She loved holidays and family gatherings; the American flag, and shopping for others. In her later years, she enjoyed being outside in the sunshine enjoying the flowers Vern planted for her, riding the golf cart with her grandchildren, and spending the evening watching TV hand in hand with her sweetheart. Phyllis is survived by her husband, Vern, of 48 years and three sons: Matt (Lisa); Wes (Karen) and Brad (Liz); 12 grandchildren and brothers, Roy (Linda) and Dave (Martha) Rowe. She was preceded in death by her parents and a loving older sister, Mary Frances Rowe. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton on Tuesday, November 22 from 6:30-8:30 pm. A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, November 23 at 1:00 pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Clinard Road, Clemmons. Phyllis will be laid to rest beside her parents and sister at Linwood United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a children's charity of your choice in her memory.
