Porter O'Henry Gray, age 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Mallard Ridge Assisted Living in Clemmons, NC.
Porter was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Anna Lucille ""Lucy"" Gray where they shared the last 30 years together at Oak Island and Newland, NC. He is also preceded in death by his parents Able David Gray and Mamie Gray Moran, a brother, Raymond Gray, two sisters, Willie Ruth Joyner and Ina May Hubbard, and a son, Robert Van Gray.
Porter attended Trinity High School in High Point, served in the US Navy and graduated from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill where he earned his BS degree in accounting. He spent his accounting career with A.M. Pullen and Company, Bruce E. Hall & Company, and was a founding partner in Gray, Callison & Co., P.A, certified public accountants where he retired in 1986.
Porter is a past president of the National Association of Accountants and the Winston-Salem Jaycees, where his chapter was awarded the Henry Giessenbier award in 1961 for the best chapter in the state of NC. He will often be remembered as a very encouraging little league baseball coach by many of his players.
Porter and Lucy loved to play golf together and were blessed with a trail of friends across the state from their days living in Wilshire in Winston-Salem, to the years together at Oak Island, and Mountain Glen Golf Club in Newland. He attended Southport Baptist Church in Southport, NC and First Baptist Church of Newland, NC. He is survived by a son, Bradley O. Gray (Diane), a daughter, Lori Gray Manuel (James), three grandchildren, Vanessa Manuel Nicol (Drew), Kelsey Manuel Huffman (Kolby) and Chris Berrier (Kristin). He is also survived by a cousin, James Welch, two nieces Jerry Matthews (Stan) and Linda Gray, and a nephew Alan Hubbard. Special friends include Landon and Loretta Dowell and May Smith that were always there as special companions.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 10, 2017 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway at 1:00PM with a celebration of life to follow at 2:00PM, officiated by Dr. Bill Jones, with entombment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park on Peters Creek Parkway.
