Rachel Denise Irby, 38, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026, while surrounded by those she loved most. Born on March 22, 1988, in Virginia Beach, VA to Patrick Irby and Patricia Mumford Irby, Rachel lived a life defined not by its length, but by the depth in which she loved, connected, and truly saw the people around her.
From a young age, Rachel was well known for her athleticism in all sports, but especially on the softball field. This is where her competitive spirit and relentless work ethic set her apart. As she grew older, those same qualities carried into every aspect of her life. She met challenges head on, never afraid to get her hands dirty. Rachel didn’t believe in limits. If she decided she was going to do something, you could consider it done. Rachel worked many years in a field not always welcoming to women. She didn’t just show up, she owned it. She made a name for herself running heavy equipment, proving every day that there wasn’t a job she couldn’t do.
But what made Rachel unforgettable wasn’t just what she did, it was how she made people feel.
Rachel had a rare and remarkable ability to understand others. She could walk into a room and, within moments, know exactly who needed a smile, a laugh, or simply someone to sit beside them. She didn’t just recognize your emotions, she felt them. It was both her greatest gift and, at times, her heaviest burden. Because of that, no one ever felt like a stranger around her. To know Rachel was to feel known in the greatest sense of the word.
She was inclusive, intelligent, deeply empathetic, and effortlessly herself. She loved movies, particularly fantasy fiction and Korean dramas, and had a passion for music of all kinds (with the notable exception of country). She found joy in life’s simplest moments. Laughter shared on a couch, a hot summer day with a water hose, quiet conversations, or time spent with the people she loved most.
And above all else, Rachel was a devoted mother.
Her son, Winston, was her greatest pride and her sweetest joy. To see Rachel as a mother was to witness love in its purest form. She adored him completely. In him, her spirit, her humor, and her heart will continue to live on.
She is also survived by her loving wife of nearly six years, Christi Vanhoy Irby, who stood beside her through life’s highs and lows, and loved her fiercely through it all. Rachel described it best herself: She loved her “More than all the words, in all the books, in all the world.”
Rachel had a one of a kind bond with her brother, Christopher Irby (Kaylen), whom she always called her “identical twin”. This is a small reflection of just how close they truly were.
In addition to her immediate family, Rachel leaves behind her grandmother, Jean Childers (Charles); and a large extended family and circle of friends who were, in every sense, family.
Rachel is preceded in death by her great grandparents, her paternal grandparents, and her uncle, Buddy Mumford.
There are some people you meet in life where time doesn’t matter, where connection is instant, real, and lasting. Rachel was that person for so many. The kind of person who leaves an imprint on your life that never fades. Even in death, Rachel was able to save many lives.
Her presence was larger than life, even in the smallest moments. Her laughter, her honesty, her unfiltered humor, and her ability to love so openly will be missed beyond words.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Zane’s Clodbuster Farms. A place where Rachel found so much solace. The family will welcome friends from 4:00-6:00.
Hayworth-Miller in Kernersville is assisting the family.
Rachel leaves behind a legacy of love, connection, and a reminder that the people in our lives are never just passing through. They are entire worlds, full and meaningful in ways we may never fully understand.
She will be missed deeply, loved endlessly, and remembered always.
