Ralph Gurney Hayes

Ralph Gurney Hayes went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 20, 2016. He was being treated at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for heart problems, after having survived four different cancers. Ralph was born in Alexander County NC on July 19, 1929 and was the 10th of 12 children. He and the love of his life, Jane Newsome Hayes, his wife of 51 years lived in Winston-Salem. He is now rejoicing with her as they are sitting at the feet of Jesus. Ralph was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Berlin from 1950-1952. He was retired from Southern Bell with thirty years of service. Ralph was a devout Christian and a longtime member of Waughtown Baptist Church. For the entirety of his life, Ralph lived out his purpose as a Christian; to love and serve God, and to love and serve others. He served alongside his beloved wife Jane as a youth leader and choir member. He also served many years within the church as a Deacon, usher, bus driver and on many church committees. He poured his love into his family, his church, and to everyone in his life. He is remembered to those who love him, as well as anyone whom he came in contact with, as someone who loved to laugh and joke and whose faith in the Lord radiated from him at every moment. Even during his recent hospital stay, he would love to joke with the nurses and doctors who were taking care of him. To his grandchildren, Ralph could not have been a more doting and adoring grandfather. Ralph was happy to talk with everyone he met and enjoyed serving Meals on Wheels and brightening the days of those to whom he delivered. He faithfully delivered Meals on Wheels for many years, even right up until his emergency hospitalization. When asked, why he volunteered, he said ""he wanted to help others in some small way."" He will be remembered by everyone as a strong, loyal, loving and devoted Christian, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Ralph is survived by his three sisters: Lessie Moser, Ruth Vaden and Ethel Stafford. Two Children: Honorable Gregory R. Hayes (Kim) and Pamela Hayes Maynard. Three grandchildren: Kristen Maynard Richards, Katherine Hayes and Benjamin Hayes. Two great grandsons: Caleb B. Richards and Christian R. Richards. and many loved nieces and nephews. The visitation will be held on Friday, December 23rd at Waughtown Baptist Church from 12PM - 2PM; and will be followed immediately by the funeral service in the church at 2PM, with Reverend Eddie Brackett officiating. Graveside service follows at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Family served by Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home. ""I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith."" II Timothy 4:7.
