Ralph Samuel Marion

Mr. Ralph Samuel Marion, 100, finished his earthly journey, December 26, 2016. He was born March 9, 1916 in Surry County to the late Eddie and Nancy Marion, one of seven sons. Ralph was a faithful member of Fairview United Methodist Church serving often as Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School Teacher. He was a loving husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, father-in-law, and good neighbor. Like many of his generation, he worked many jobs to make a living for his family. He worked as a welder in the ship yards during WWII and in the powder plant in Radford. He loved farming as well as looking for special rocks and arrowheads. Ralph was employed by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for 21 years. He was the family's own E.F. Hutton; he was introverted, quiet, soft spoken, dry humor, but when he talked, we listened. Daddy loved the Lord above all. To be a good witness was his goal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 73 years, Etta May Marion; two sons, Frank and Danny Marion; one granddaughter, Kacie Noel; five brothers: Ray, Fred, Joe, Carl, and Glenn Marion; one daughter-in-law, Grace Marion. He is survived by two sons, Donald Marion (Frances), Tony Marion (Susu); one daughter, Joan Hauser (Andy); brother, Everett Marion of Rocky Mount; daughter-in-law, Faye Marion; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Fairview United Methodist Church with Rev. Duncan Martin officiating. Interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church, beginning at 10:00 AM.
