Lieutenant Colonel, Rebecca A. Sapp Mickey, US Army, Retired, 89, of Hobbsville, NC passed away peacefully on Monday, April 27, 2026.

Rebecca was born on May 5, 1936, in Winston-Salem, NC. She was the daughter of Fred Wilburn Sapp and Annie Lee Carter Sapp, both deceased. Rebecca graduated from Old Town High School and from the City Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, both in Winston-Salem, NC. 

She proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserve Nurse Corps and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after 22 years of honorable service. During her many years of service to our great country, Rebecca served as a Combat Nurse with the 312th Evacuation Hospital deployed out of Greensboro, NC, where she actively served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf. At the age of 54, Lieutenant Colonel Rebecca A. Mickey (Ret.), while on active duty, received The Bronze Star Medal, “For exceptionally meritorious service during the period of January 18, 1991 to March 15, 1991, while serving as Head Operating Room Nurse, 312th Evacuation Hospital.” 

She was employed at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem, NC, for over 42 years. Rebecca was a member of Friedberg Moravian Church in Winston-Salem. Rebecca was also very active in many nursing and veterans associations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, Disabled Veterans of America, and the Association of Operating Room Nurses. While one of her greatest accomplishments was receiving The Bronze Star Medal, she was also the recipient of the “Great 100 RN Excellence Award” in 1996. 

Lt. Col. Rebecca A. Mickey (Ret.) will be remembered for her unwavering dedication and service to her family, her Country, the United States Army, and to all of the patients to whom she unselfishly administered help in the time of their needs, whether on the battlefield or in the local hospital. She was always there to proudly serve. Rebecca loved animals, especially her cats she had over the years.

Survivors include her son, Robert Mickey and wife, Dianne of Hobbsville, NC; two grandsons, Patrick Mickey and wife Ashley, and Kyle Mickey and fiancé, Gabby; one great-grandson, Wyatt Mickey; two nieces; and one nephew.

In addition to her parents, Rebecca was preceded in death by her three siblings: Fred W. Sapp, Jr., Flora M. Sapp, and Phillip F. Sapp.

Arrangements are being made for a private and honorable interment at Arlington National Cemetery.
