Reid Essick

Reid Everette Essick, age 74, of High Point, passed away on July 16, 2018, at Hospice Home at High Point, after an almost 2-year courageous battle with throat cancer.  He was born on June 4, 1944, to Paul and Erma Vermillion Essick in Winston-Salem, NC.  His parents preceded him in death.  Reid was also preceded in death by an infant son, Jeffery Reid Essick, who was stillborn in 1962. He was also preceded in death by father-in-law John Van Vleet. Reid is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Joanne Van Vleet Essick.  He is also survived by two sons - Kenneth Brian Essick of Wilmington, NC, and Timothy Scott Essick and his wife Dana of Advance, NC.  He is also survived by two grandchildren, Matthew (Matt) and Nathaniel (Nate), as well as a sister, Elaine Atkins (husband, Jerry Atkins) of Mocksville, NC and several nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by mother-in-law Nancy Van Vleet of West Lafayette, IN and sister-in-law Terry Newman and family of Louisville, KY. And, of course, his beloved feline companions, Mia and Marble. Reid attended Mineral Springs High School and afterwards began working in the printing business; first at Carmichael Printing Company, then Hanes Corporation Printing, and eventually retiring from PBM Graphics (formerly known as Fisher-Harrison Corporation). Reid was of the Baptist faith.  In his younger years he really enjoyed playing softball on the Woodland Baptist Church team and established great friendships with his teammates.  He was a baseball coach for Northwest Forsyth Little League for several years and was a real mentor for the kids that he coached, including his two sons.  He was a great father, giving his sons guidance, inspiration and life lessons for them to carry with them throughout their lives. Reid was an avid sports fan.  He loved the Carolina Tarheels especially their basketball team. He was life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox and would frequently travel to Florida with Joanne to watch them practice and play in Spring Training.  Reid loved the game of golf, especially the time spent on the course playing and laughing with his friends. Reid loved his grandsons.  He enjoyed watching Nate play ball, whether it was baseball, football or basketball, and he cherished his interactions with Matt, having long, interesting conversations with him on any number of topics. A private graveside service for family is planned for Saturday, 7/21/18. A celebration of Reid's life for family and friends is planned for a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Reid's name to Hospice Home at High Point, 1803 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262, Juliet's House Animal Rescue, or Animal Rescue and Foster Program.
