Richard Matthew Marvell passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 2:00 AM at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born in New York City, in the borough of Manhattan, on July 28, 1948, to Julie Harven and Frank White Marvell. He was raised in Greenwich Village, New York City, with his mother and two brothers. Proceeding him in death were his parents, and two brothers, Michael and Christopher Marvell. Richard is survived by his wife of 19 years, Robin L. Fisher of the home, and his two children, Graham and Grace Marvell, both of the home. He is also survived by two adult children, Emma and Matthew Marvell; two cousins, Joanne Utley and Robert Sulek; and many beloved extended family members. He applied to, and graduated from, The High School of Music and Art, which was a public magnet high school that drew talented students from all boroughs with the purpose of honing their talents in music, art and the performing arts. It was at this school, and in his community in Greenwich Village, that Richard was exposed to the cultural richness and diversity that created his passion for the arts, and especially music. Up until the very end of his life, he delighted in listening to some of his favorite composers, such as Beethoven, Bach, Mahler, Brahms, Chopin and Pachelbel. It was his greatest pleasure to listen to his children play some of these cherished pieces of music. While working full time at New York University Hospital, Richard put his way through school at New York University and obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 1974. He later moved to Boston, where he graduated from Boston College in 1979 with his M.ED. in Counseling Psychology. He worked in a variety of settings since that time, in both private practice and community mental health, and was most recently employed at Crossroads, later to become Partners Behavioral Health, for the past 17 years. A memorial service will be held 12:00 PM, Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Shallowford Presbyterian Church in Lewisville, with Pastor Jeff Sockwell officiating. A reception and receiving line will be held immediately after the service in the fellowship hall. Flowers will be accepted, or donations can be made either to Shallowford Presbyterian Church, 1200 Lewisville-Clemmons Rd. in Lewisville, NC., or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
