Richard McRae Mitchell

Mr. Richard McRae Mitchell, 90, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born on August 17, 1935, in Forsyth County, the son of the late Vecue Kiser Mitchell and Blanche Victoria Oakes Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell retired from Flowers Bakery with over 30 years of service. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and racing at Bowman Gray. He loved working in his yard and eating breakfast with his friends, Johnny, Tom and Boyd, at Bojangles. Special thanks to his devoted brother-in-law, William Hairston, and to his caretakers (nieces), Cheryl Gwyn and Carroll Gunthrope, (sister), Cody Phillips, and brother, Christopher Kimbrough. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Gwendolyn Leonard and husband Jesse, Betty Jiles and husband Shelley and Ellen Hairston; and his lifelong partner, Maxine Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell is survived by two brothers, Christopher Kimbrough (Claire) and Jerry Mitchell (Catherine); three sisters, Cody Phillips and her late husband, Robert, Mary Joyner and Emily Rader (Coleman); a brother-in-law, William Hairston; a sister-in-law, Loretta Mitchell and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall with Rev. Tammy Dixon officiating. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 prior to the service at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall.
