Richard Daniel Williamson, 86, passed away peacefully at 10:30 pm, Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Forsyth Medical Center surrounded by loving family. He was born December 7, 1938, in Social Circle, Georgia to the late R. B. Williamson and Cornelia Smith Williamson. Richard retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Journalist serving in the Public Affairs Office in New York City in June 1986 with over 25 years of dedicated service. Before leaving NYC, he was assigned to serve on the International Naval Revue Information Bureau for the rededication of the Statue of Liberty in June of 1986. He served on several ships including the Telfair 1956-57, the USS Coronado Flagship in the Middle East and Persian Gulf in 1980-81, and the USS Lexington Aircraft Carrier in Pensacola, Fl. While in Pensacola, Richard was responsible for updating the 1984 Journalist Naval Education and Training Command book.
Not long after retirement, Richard met the love of his life, Lynn, and they were married for over 38 wonderful years. With his passion for Journalism, Richard ran a Resume Writing Service for years, with career counseling in downtown Winston-Salem. Also, he enjoyed editing at the Booneville Enterprise Newspaper. He was a longtime member of Unity Moravian Church where he served as an usher, on many committees, including Personnel and different church boards. He completed the Bethel course at Unity for two years which covered the Old and New Testaments and then taught 6-week versions to the congregation. In addition to his writing, he loved all his family so much and always enjoyed spending time with them. He also loved golfing, traveling and watching the Atlanta Braves baseball team.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Joshua; sister, Novene Still and a brother-in-law, Jimmy Still. Surviving is his loving wife of over 38 years, E. Lynn Moser Williamson; two sons, Monty Williamson (Mickey) and Rick Williamson; a daughter, Pam Williamson Bazemore (Bob); three step-children, Robert Dentiste (Sophie), Brent Dentiste (Melissa), and Andrea Mundy (Jimmy); 11 grandchildren, Eric (Nicole), Melissa (Jason), Cassie (Steve), Tommy (Kamerin), Christie (Chad), Jacob (Victoria), Jonah (Rose), Erica (Chris), Taylor, Violet, and Nathan; 11 great-grandchildren and many special nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Friday, August 22, 2025, at Unity Moravian Church with Rev. Scott Rainey officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard with military honors. The family will receive friends from 10:45-11:45 prior to the service.
