Rita Mae Head Atwood

Mrs. Rita Mae Head Atwood, 69, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 2, 2026, with her son and daughter-in-law by her side.

Rita was born on September 16, 1957, in Forsyth County, NC, to the late William Mailson Head and Edna Mae Church Head.

Delightfully witty and incredibly smart, Rita was known for her sharp tongue and her remarkably big heart. She loved her family fiercely and brought a memorable spark to the lives of those around her.

She find great joy in life's simple pleasures, whether she was losing herself in a good romance novel, watching or listening to her favorite Elvis Presley classics, or soaking in the sun during family vacations at Ocean Lakes Family Campground. Rooted in her deep faith, Rita drew great comfort in knowing she would one day be beautifully reunited with her sweet mama and daddy in heaven.

In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carson Atwood.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Clint Austin Atwood; her daughter-in-law, Jennifer Atwood; and her two adored grandchildren, Raeley Atwood and her partner Ally Reyes, and Ace Atwood. She is also survived by her brother, Steve Head and his wife Beverly; and her sister, Renee Huff and her husband Frank.

Per Rita's wishes, no formal services will be held. Her family will later fulfill her dream of returning to the coast, where her ashes will be peacefully released along the shores she loved so dearly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
