Robert “Bob” Bowling Chappell, 95, passed away on February 9, 2026, a long-time resident of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Robert was born on November 15, 1930, in Durham County, North Carolina, to the late Lonnie and Myrtle Chappell. He lived a long and purposeful life marked by faith, service, craftsmanship, and quiet devotion to others.
He was an Army veteran, serving honorably in the 8th Infantry Division as a Field Wiremen during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1953. Following his military service, Robert worked for the United States Postal Service, where he dedicated 30 years of service before retiring.
Robert had a deep love for working with his hands. His passions included woodworking, gardening, and stained-glass making. He especially cherished time spent in Red Springs, North Carolina helping with the Baptist-Men-Mission.
A faithful and devoted member of Rosemont Baptist Church, Robert was often found fixing what needed repair, unlocking or securing the building, serving in the food pantry and quietly ensuring everything functioned smoothly. The many keys he carried for the church were a symbol of how vital he was to its daily operations. He also participated in mission trips providing hurricane relief following Hurricane Katrina with his best friend Dick Miller.
A special mention to Len and Katie Freitas, Dick Miller and the Rosemont church family who loved Bob through many acts of service, countless phone calls, McDonald’s coffee meetings and support in many ways. Thank you to Kerner Ridge Assisted Living facility staff for all the love, care and support given to Bob.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his siblings; his beloved wife, Marie “Pat” Chappell; and his son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Diana Chappell.
He is survived by his sons, Ronald (Cynthia) Chappell, and Michael (Patsy) Daniels; five grandchildren, Jonathan (Hannah) Chappell, Jennifer (Randy) Chappell Kidd, Nathaniel (Carrie) Chappell, Tony Woodlief and Heather Warner, numerous great-grandchildren and other cherished family members.
The funeral will begin with receiving friends at 1:00pm on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Rosemont Baptist Church (415 West Clemmonsville Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127). The funeral service, with military honors, officiated by Pastor Mark Reed, will follow at 2:00pm. A private entombment service will be held at Parklawn Memorial Park Mausoleum at another date and time. Honoree Pall-Barrers are: Len Freitas, Dick Miller, Randy Kidd and Larry Osborne.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Rosemont Baptist Church Food Pantry, 415 West Clemmonsville Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family of Mr. Chappell.
