Robert "Bob" Jones III

Robert J. (Bob) Jones, 81, of Winston-Salem, died at his home on December 7, 2024. He was born January 29, 1943, at Fitzsimmons Army Base in Denver, Colorado, to Robert Jones and Connie (Leitner) Jones.

Bob grew up in Rockford, Illinois, where he attended East High School and played oboe in the state orchestra. He received his PhD in Psychology from Southern Illinois University in 1970 and moved to North Carolina in 1971, where he began his career at UNC-Greensboro. In 1980, he began working at Appalachian State University in Boone, where he spent the remainder of his career before retiring in 2004.

He was an accomplished photographer and writer. He loved sports, travel, music, bicycling, and astronomy, among many other interests and hobbies throughout his life. Bob was a lifelong fan of the Atlanta Braves, whose games he attended in Milwaukee during his youth before the team moved to Atlanta. His childhood hero was Henry Aaron.

Bob was cherished throughout his life by family and friends for his humor, love, support, and notable generosity. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sister Monica. Bob is survived by his sister, Joy Chandler, and husband Buzz Chandler of Colorado; brother Rick Jones of Kansas; and nieces Shalane Vashaw, Genevieve Chandler, and Molly Paxton.

No formal services will be held at this time. A memorial will be held in the new year.
