Robert Wade Poole

Robert Wade Poole, 92, of Winston-Salem, died September 26. Born September 4, 1922, in Statesville, NC, he was the son of the late Wade Daniel Poole and Bessie Rumple Poole.
Rev. Poole was married to the late Pearl Loretta Steelman Poole for 65 years. He is survived by his sons, Robert ""Bob"" Wade Poole, Jr., and his fiancée Angela Marie Forish, and William ""Bill"" Jackson Poole and his wife Sarah Cheney-Poole; two grandchildren, Jackson Davis Poole and Mollie Greer Poole; a sister-in-law, Emma Grey Steelman Mansfield, all of Winston-Salem; and many nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond. He was preceded in death by his brother William Oscar Poole and sister Mary Poole Hager.
He served as a corporal in the Third Marine Division, US Marine Corp, for three years with campaigns to Guam and Iwo Jima during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
He studied briefly at Mitchell College and Emory University before the war. He entered the New Orleans Baptist Seminary in September, 1946, receiving a bachelor of arts from Louisiana College, Alexandria in 1950. After working in several Louisiana churches, he transferred to Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY. While a seminary student, he was the choir director at Crescent Hill and Ninth & O Baptist Churches, receiving the master in church music in 1952. He served as minister of music at Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston-Salem (1952-1955); Calder Baptist Church in Beaumont, TX (1955-1961); and Tabernacle Baptist Church, Raleigh, NC (1961-1983), the last 7 years of which he was associate pastor.
His capacity for friendship, loyalty to his church, passion for music and missions, and devotion to God and family marked a life filled with dignity and grace.
The service will be held Thursday, October 2, at 11:00 am, First Baptist Church, Winston-Salem. Reverend David Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends at 10:00 am in the Kelly Auditorium at First Baptist Church.
Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Statesville.
