Robert Shumate

Mr. Robert Charles Shumate, 80, passed away on December 4, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Health. He was born on June 24, 1937 to Jettie Susan Taylor and Barney Weldon Shumate in Wilkes County. Robert proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and Army Reserves. He earned many awards for exceptional marksmanship. Following his 25 year career as a truck driver with Leaseway Motor Car Co., Robert worked as a bus driver for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, retiring with 20 years of service. Above all, Robert enjoyed spending time with his loving family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne T. Shumate; as well as 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Surviving are daughters, Angela Shumate Hinsdale and Amy Shumate; grandchildren, Daniel Robert Byrd, Mackenzie JoAnna Hinsdale and Kellie Caroline Hinsdale; numerous nieces and nephews; a cherished, longtime companion, Doris Moore and family; and he will be remembered as a "Papaw of the Heart" to many. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Sat., Dec. 9, 2017 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. John Bishop officiating. Entombment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 9:00 - 11:45 AM prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
