Robie Ferguson

Mr. Robie "Bud" Morse Ferguson, of Homestead Hills Retirement Community, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, after a brief illness just shy of his 95th birthday. Bud was born on November 30, 1922, in Forsyth County to the late Robie M. Ferguson and Annie Douglas Ferguson of Maitland, Nova Scotia. Bud attended R.J. Reynolds High School and began a long successful career in the newspaper industry-first at Sun Printing in Old Salem and then to the Winston-Salem Sentinal and finally the Winston-Salem Journal. He retired as their supervisor/editor of the Composing Room after 38 years (and 4 months as he'd like to add). In the meantime, as WWII waged on, Bud was drafted in the Army at the age of 21 and served as a Corporal fighting for freedom 30 months of active duty from February 1943 - October 1945 in the European Theatre. He was assigned to the 737th Tank Battalion "A" Company serving under General George Patton as a medium tank crewman. His duty included Battles and Campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received 5 Bronze Service Stars and the distinguished Purple Heart for his bravery. Returning to civilian life Bud's circle of friends and family grew. In addition to his work at the paper, he enjoyed golf especially in retirement, where he could be found on the golf course 6 days a week. He played out of Hillcrest and Wilshire Golf Clubs until age 80. He had numerous golf buddies and card playing buddies. He could attest to nine hole-in-ones and a "pretty good" game of golf even though he was never one to call attention to himself. Bud met his special friend of 28 years, Hallie Lawson while mall walking at Hanes Mall where both walked thousands of miles over the course of their time together, adding many friends along the way. The two also enjoyed going on cruises, ballroom dancing, putting puzzles together (400 to date), and watching ball games on tv. Both attended church as Quakers at Forsyth Friends Meeting. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Davis McCorkendale Ferguson; a step-son, Doug McCorkendale; and his sisters, Mildred Ferguson MacBride Swan and Ruth Ferguson Knox. Bud is survived by his nephews, Eddie Knox (Sylvia) of Rock Hill, SC and Jimmie Knox (Sharon) of Rural Hall, NC; one niece, Ann Triscott (Mark) of Boston, MA; many great and great-great nieces and nephews whom will miss their Uncle Bud; and a special niece, Kathy Dunlap, who visited him often and was by his side when he passed away. Bud left a legacy of love through his extended family and friends and will be dearly missed. A service to celebrate Bud's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 with Mr. John P. Porter officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
