Roger Lee Nelson, Sr.

Kernersville – Roger Lee Nelson, Sr., 90, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2024, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born June 22, 1933, in Forsyth County to Harvey Glenn Nelson and Doskey Nelson. Roger graduated from High Point College with a bachelor’s degree and earned his master’s degree from the University of North Carolina of Greensboro. He was a coach and principal at NW Guilford High School, coaching 2 state basketball championships. Roger coached, guided, and touched countless numbers of individuals. His legacy lives on through the gymnasium that was named after him. Roger loved the outdoors in which he spent his time bow hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Guilford Bowhunters Association. As an avid fisherman, Roger enjoyed trips to Harkers Island for over 60 years with family and friends. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandkids.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol Marshall Nelson; a son, Roger Lee Nelson, Jr.; eight siblings, Glenn R. Nelson, Carl Nelson, Mildred Weavil (M. Glenn), Richard Nelson (Loree), Margie McKaughn (Richard), Julia Nelson, Nettie Nelson, and Mickey Ann Nelson.

He is survived by one son, David M. Nelson (Sherri); four grandchildren, Glenn M. Nelson (Whitney), Dalton C. Nelson (Nicole), Matthew D. Nelson, and Michael Nelson (Sydney); four great grandchild, Madie Jo Nelson, Addison Leigh Nelson, Cheyann, and Colten; one brother, Ralph Nelson (Faye); one sister-in-law, Betty Nelson; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm, Sunday, June 16, 2024, at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel with Vernon Farrington officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
